Our "Black Pine Bonsai" pot is
included in "500 Raku" from Lark Crafts.
Our ceramic art is a sense of self-expression - this includes experimenting with different types of clays & slips, glazes and firing techniques. We create work that reflects our life style. There is an emphasis on nature, as our passions include maintaining our Mediterranean garden surroundings, hiking & camping in the National Parks & Southern California deserts, & traveling abroad.
We began our journey into production pottery in 1975. Susan was a member of the Yellow Springs Pottery and Jim built and maintained the kilns and firing. Upon Jim’s retirement, we began working together in our studio in our home. Our ceramics have been displayed in numerous galleries and we participate in several art shows each year. Our work is featured in the book Raku 500.
We collaborate to create unique ceramic forms and figures in Raku, which is based on an ancient Japanese technique involving fast firing and cooling. All our clay forms and figures are wheel thrown and/or hand built. Forms that have carvings are done freehand or based on our original sketches. Lidded forms may also include small ceramic baskets that hang from the lid inside the piece. The basket holds a small scroll of paper to be used for a written wish, memory, or intention.
All our pieces are art forms and not to be used with food or liquids.
The garden/studio is open for sales by appointment. For more information about ordering or visiting the studio, please contact us through our website or phone 760-390-0599.
